The Pawfect Partnership

This is the second blog in a two part series on why two friends decided to disrupt the property market. In the second instalment partner Nicky talks about her experience of renting with cats and why the Pawfect Properties mission is important to her.

Animals have always been a big part of my life. Growing up we had cats, dogs, ferrets, and rabbits and my mother even set up and ran her own pet care business for a while. Pets make a house a home in my view, so when I had the opportunity to be part of the Pawfect Properties mission I jumped at the chance.

Before buying my own home, which I share with my two cats Cloud and Rainbow (picture below), I experienced the difficulty of finding a suitable pet friendly rental on many occasions. In particular, there was an instance where I had to move at short notice due to work but was unable to find a pet friendly property in the area to rent in time for the move. I ended up finding a short term / temporary let and sneaking my two fur babies with me, which I would never recommend to anyone. Living in sin with my two cats with the fear of eviction looming over us was not easy, but it was better than the alternative of leaving them behind.

After a few months of searching for a more permanent home, and unable to find anywhere willing to accept pets, I had to make a really tough decision. Luckily my mother was able to adopt my two cats and she treated them like her own. Still, it was heartbreaking that I couldn’t keep them with me, especially as I had reared them from kittens.

There are so many pets across the country in need of a good home and so many potential owners waiting for the opportunity to provide this for them. It’s terrible that the property market is geared towards keeping these pets and people apart. Worse, it creates an environment that often forces people to give up their beloved companions when circumstances change unexpectedly, for example because of a breakup or unemployment. This is particularly relevant now as we all struggle to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pawfect Properties mission to make pet friendly homes more accessible is more important now than it has ever been. I’m proud and excited to be working with my childhood friend Mitzi to provide this much needed service.
